EPISODE 40

The headlines these days are just truly dreadful. Conference realignment? Bleh. Coaches doing stupid off-field things? Ugh. Big-time job openings means it's time to run through a list of candidates? Oh brother!

Here are a handful-plus of Mid-American Conference football players (note: not all necessarily stars) that we really haven't spent any (or enough) time on this season, because it's worth still talking about the damn football season when it's currently Week 8, damnit.

Players Alex and Kaleb talk about this episode:

  • CMU's Daniel Richardson (12:46)
  • Akron's Konata Mumpfield (15:38)
  • Toledo's Dequan Finn (17:23)
  • Ohio's Armani Rogers (20:15)
  • Miami's Keyon Mozee (22:41)
  • NIU's James Ester (26:31)
  • Ball State's Justin Hall (32:21)

EPISODE 39

Alex went to EMU vs. Ball State to see if the Eagles would take down the defending MAC Champs. They did not, Cardinals won 38-31.

The Eagles squandered three offensive drives in the first three quarters (punt, interception, punt) which turned into 17 points for Ball State. That was probably the biggest difference in the game.

Carson Steele's great and had the first 100-yard rushing game of his career (and for the team's season), but it's the Iron Man that I'm always infatuated with.

EPISODE 38

We're officially halfway through the 2021 season! Alex and Kaleb take you around the Mid-American Conference to see what's been most impressive (good and bad) about the year so far. Kent State and NIU are both 2-0 in league play: could they be the two to go to Detroit this December?

EPISODE 37

Alex & Kaleb task each other to say whether each others' 10 MACtion statements for each other are either true or false. Such as:

  • WMU's offense can definitely keep up the pace with its scoring offense.
  • Kent State can keep creating turnovers on defense.
  • Sean Lewis will spend six (6) years at Kent State before he takes on his next coaching job.
  • Ohio's going 0-12 this year.
  • BGSU's not finishing last in the MAC East this year.
  • And more...

EPISODE 36

Now that we're two weeks through the season, we've seen enough football to start learning some things about these squads. While we don't have the time to go over all 12 MAC schools, there are some "what's next?" questions that are probably worth spreading around.

Toledo lost another game where it might've scored too quickly, and cost the team at Notre Dame. What's this to say about Jason Candle's coaching future?

Ohio's offense looked bad, and it's time to give this group a more serious look. We couldn't learn much about this team through three games last year, but two games taught us a lot about where this team is in 2021.

EMU's got a quarterback problem. They've got two that they really like, but planning out how to use both of them to put points on the board seems to be a damning issue.

EPISODE 35

Week 1 overreactions? Never us.

Week 1 learning experiences? Also never us.

The games & storylines Alex & Kaleb hit on:

  • NIU did the damn thing. I'm not going to type out the thing they want me to call it, but they did the thing at Georgia Tech.
  • It only took one guy at Western Illinois for Ball State to feel nervous.
  • Expected Buffalo to win big, but not *that* big.
  • Did we even learn anything about the MAC East?
  • Kent State barely scored at Texas A&M, but what else were you expecting?
  • CMU played well at Missouri. Shouts out Lew Nichols.
  • What's the MAC's record vs. the Big Ten going to be this weekend? There are four midwest road trips on Saturday.

EPISODE 34

Way to go Huskies!

NIU pulled off a Power 5 upset over Georgia Tech which was sealed by a gutsy 2-point conversion in the final seconds of regulation to avoid overtime. It's the first big win of Thomas Hammock's career, and gives his many, many freshmen a memory that they'll always be able to look back on.

No other MAC team pulled off a P5 upset in Week 1, and nobody had the embarrassing loss to a visiting FCS team. But Ball State almost became that embarrassed team against Western Illinois.

Week 1 final scores:

  • Buffalo 69, Wagner 7
  • Ball State 31, WIU 21
  • Tennessee 38, BGSU 6
  • EMU 35, St. Francis 15
  • Michigan 47, WMU 14
  • Cincinnati 49, Miami 14
  • Toledo 49, Norfolk State 10
  • Syracuse 29, Ohio 9
  • Auburn 60, Akron 10
  • Missouri 34, CMU 24
  • Northern Illinois 22, Georgia Tech 21
  • Texas A&M 41, Kent State 10

31. MAC Previews: NIU | Buffalo | WMU

August 20, 2021

EPISODE 31

In our final MAC Previews episode of the offseason, we finish with three teams that have varying degrees of experience in the MAC Championship game: Northern Illinois, Buffalo, and Western Michigan.

NIU (1:52) has 88 freshmen on its football roster right now. Yes, 88. Sure there are a good number of third-year, redshirt-freshmen lumped in there, but they’re going to be going up against sixth-year seniors and fifth-year juniors. Can we expect things to materialize into W’s?

Buffalo (19:00) had to replace its best head coach of all time during the spring — not even the winter; Kansas hired Lance Leipold in late April. Maurice Linguist seems like a good hire for the Bulls’ program, but it’s just not going to be easy to install a new playbook and be competent about it in just a short handful of months. At least there’s still some starting talent that’s been leftover.

WMU (30:30) has the potential to have the best offense in the MAC this year. WMU also has the potential to have an incredibly talented defense not hold up its end of the bargain. Also, Kaleb Eleby is the man.
